I must admit this Allergic Traveler is not a big fan of Myrtle Beach. I do not mean any disrespect; I just find it over populated, both with people and commercially. I know this seems kind of ironic as I was just in Vegas and I also spend a lot of time in New York. Myrtle Beach is just different. Maybe it is because everything is so spread out and you can’t walk from store to store. You need to get into the car, sit in traffic and then head to your next location. Anyway, I digress. I wanted to tell you about my recent adventures there.
Some close friends asked us if we wanted to go boating in North Myrtle for the long weekend. How could I not jump at the opportunity? Plus if we were going boating, then I would not be stuck in traffic. What gave me even more of a desire to go was the menu planning that occurred ahead of time. At my friend’s suggestion, all the women got together the week before and planned out our menus for while we would be there. As you know I have food allergies and my husband (as you may not know) is on a sugar free diet. We are not always the first couple you would invite for a weekend getaway! It takes careful planning and consideration before we even pack our bags. The ladies got together and hashed out breakfast, lunch and dinner for the 3 days. We each divvied up and conquered the meals. Individually we headed to the grocery stores and prepared safe and healthy Tarah (& Mark) friendly meals. Before heading to the grocery store, we all knew what was taboo. Everyone also knew what substitutes could be used instead.
The first night we arrived, we all planned to eat at the local fish house, as we knew we would be getting in late. We did not want to have to drive for 4 hours and then start cooking. The restaurant of choice had an extensive seafood menu, which I am highly allergic to. As soon as I arrived at the restaurant (Board Walk Billys), I was on guard. It is not easy for me to eat in seafood restaurants. To play it safe, I was planning on ordering a salad, with oil and vinegar on the side. However, my friend arrived before me and spoke to the chef about my allergies. As soon as I sat down, the chef sat down with me and we plotted and planned my dinner. I ended up having a decadent piece of tuna along with a salad.
The next few days we spent at Bird Island, where we cooked all pre-planned dishes. No one went hungry and we all had a great time. What made this trip especially special was the fact that I was not the only one looking out for me. Although food allergies are my “thing” it is nice to have others looking out for me as well.
