Last month, when this Allergic Traveler was at the Gluten Free Expo in Raleigh, I had the chance to meet the brains behind YoDish. This North Carolina based company is developing an app to help those of us with food allergies or dietary restrictions eat out. Their app, designed to help a community of eaters, is like a journal of dining. You log your allergens and your dining experience. Others may then benefit from your experience and you may benefit from theirs. I find this approach very refreshing, as I know a lot of people that will not dine out due to their restrictions. I have always gone to restaurants ever since I can remember. I am glad to know I am not the only one. I asked Justin, the founder of YoDish what his top 5 reasons for eating out were, and here is what he had to say…

Justin’s Top 5 Reasons for Dining Out

I launched YoDish because our family faces huge obstacles to dining out safely together.  Two of my three children have life threatening allergies to egg, dairy, peanuts, and tree nuts, and my wife is gluten free.  I am always amazed by how actively people in this community share what they have learned to make the journey easier for others, and I am trying to make that easier when it comes to eating out with dietary restrictions.  Dining out plays such an important role in today’s society that navigating a restaurant meal is almost a requirement.  Here are my top 5 reasons to venture out.

  1.  With a strong personal focus on career, I believe dining out is important for building business relationships.  So many business meetings and events occur at restaurants or are catered.  For those with food allergies, having experience dining out before such events makes for a more smooth experience during potentially important opportunities.
  2.  As a parent of children with food allergies, I view eating out as an excellent opportunity to model strong food allergy management skills for our children while they are young.  Eventually our children will be out on their own, and I want to know that they will be able to manage their food allergies appropriately when that time comes.
  3.  Dining out saves us from cleaning the dishes today…again.  We have three young kids in our house, so we are constantly loading or unloading the dishwasher.  Sometimes we need to take a break from it all and enjoy ourselves.
  4.  Eating out with restrictions and sharing about it on social media (and YoDish, of course) is one way to be a role model for others who may be hesitant to venture out.
  5.  Finally, I love to travel, and I try to immerse myself in the culture of a place to the greatest extent possible when traveling.  Often, dining out is the most accessible way to taste a culture’s cuisine.
